Page one matters. Let’s talk about how Google works. Google works on relevance, trust, and proximity. Proximity is more geared toward the Google My Business (GMB) product and maps and gives us page-one opportunities, rankings, and traffic for those who follow.

So your business and any online assets you have must show accurate and matching information across the web. Otherwise, you’re going to lose trust with searchers and Google. You’ll learn the foundational items, how one builds upon another, in later posts. Your website must have relevant, keyword-rich content that closely matches the query of the searcher in order to have the greatest chance of showing up on page one.

Let’s talk about the path to page one. It’s like building a house. First is the foundational optimization: having the business name, address, and phone number cleaned up is essential. Building citations, monitoring, removing duplicate listings, correcting errors, and adding and updating sites, directories, and maps. All of these things, including online brand awareness and monitoring, are essential. If a business doesn’t get these fundamental things right, it makes it very difficult to build the second floor of the “house.”
